Matthew Holden Bates

Matthew Holden Bates is an American oil painter who lives and works in Florence, Italy. Born in Washington, D.C. where he was exposed to art at a very early age. He studied art with Percy Martin at the Sidwell Friends School for three years. At 18 he moved to San Francisco to study painting and drawing techniques at the Academy of Art University. At the Academy he took a class with world renowned sculptor, Thomas Marsh, who said ”If you think you are an artist, then you have to go to Firenze.” The next semester MHB was on his way to Florence Italy, and that was in 1990. MHB has lived there ever since. The quality of the art in Florence is on such a high level that it changed MHB at an early age and made his paintings transform into the ultra realism that we find in his portfolio today. MHB has had an exciting career, showing his paintings all over the world, in New York, Paris, Cannes, Washington, DC, Boston, to a one man show at Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence.
